For what would be pianist Marvin Ash's third and final full LP as a leader, he performs a set of New Orleans-based music as part of Decca's "At Midnight" series. Ash performs a mostly easy-listening set, joined by guitarist George Van Eps (who has some fine chordal solos on the ballads), bassist Ray Leatherwood, either Alvin Stoller or Nick Fatool on drums and (on three of the dozen songs) clarinetist Matty Matlock. The most heat is generated on his two features: Scott Joplin's "Search-light Rag" and his own "Du a Ferdinand." Otherwise the emphasis is on medium-slow renditions of such tunes as "New Orleans," "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" and "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans." This little-known album will be difficult to locate.
