San Francisco trend-buckers Nervous Circuits did the unthinkable at the height of grunge rock purism: they used keyboards to bolster their chaotic noise. Further, their live gigs even featured a light show! One of their best albums, VSS, has been refurbished in lavish fashion in a deluxe reissue from the Hydra Head label. Here, the band’s vertiginous, horror-film keyboards and treated vocals invested their post-punk rhythms with an old-school frayed-wire tension that set them apart from other noise acts. Echoes of VSS are present in legions of challenging acts active today.
