One of Sweden's top trumpeters and one who had a stint with Duke Ellington, Rolf Ericson was still in his musical prime in 1989 when he recorded this CD for the Japanese Interplay label; however the music -- a set of ten duets with pianist Lex Jasper -- is generally on the sleepy side. The ballads in particular do not seem to have much purpose and Ericson adds little to the themes other than pretty playing. The better performances are the hotter ones (such as "Falling in Love with Love," "Four," and "On the Trail") but even those are not that substantial. Jasper's piano playing is mostly pretty anonymous and Ericson has made more significant statements elsewhere. A pleasant but forgettable release.
