This Broadway cast album recounts the music from a minor 1992 musical based on the 1982 film about the appearance of a swashbuckling but drunken movie star (rather like Errol Flynn) on a live 1950s television comedy show (rather like Your Show of Shows). Composer Stephen Flaherty and lyricist Lynn Ahrens previously had succeeded on Broadway with Once on This Island, and this show should have been less of a stretch for them than that tropical allegory, but its very conventionality is its weakness. Working with a cast led by comedienne Andrea Martin, Lainie Kazan (re-creating her role from the movie) and, as the troublesome star, Tim Curry (of Rocky Horror Picture Show fame), Flaherty and Ahrens fail to move beyond standard Broadway musical comedy fare, so that much of this sounds like a rewrite of better material. The principals perform valiantly, but this show never really gets off the ground.
