Michel Godzom is an extraordinary clarinet player from Martinique who is also a great biguine moderne musician. He has modernized various forms of music from Martinique including biguine, mazurka, waltz, and quadrille. Many of the modern forms of Martiniquan music take biguine moderne as their basis. Here he shows his prowess and agility in creating music that flows and swings hard. He also demonstrates with Antillean nonchalance the ability to weave exquisite melodies and change rhythms seamlessly. His music also combines humor and surprise with an artist's touch to make very danceable and hypnotic grooves. All of the compositions on this album are written by Godzom, with the exception of a song by another great clarinet player from Martinique, Alexandre Stellio. The music here recalls the golden age of large orchestras in the Antilles. They would tour from Martinique to Cuba playing creolized ballroom salon music that is the basis of modern popular music of the islands today. This is special music and done with style. Highly recommended.
