Svend Asmussen was one of the great swing violinists but, because he has spent most of his life in Scandinavia, his talents have often been overlooked through the years. This Phontastic CD is a very welcome release, for it features Asmussen on 11 selections from 1935-1940; all but the first seven date from 1940. Although this is not a "complete" reissue, it does give one a fine overview of the violinist's better swing sides, usually featuring him in a sextet/septet with one or two other horns and tripling on vocals and occasional vibes. Until a more comprehensive series comes out, this sampler is essential for listeners who think that Stephane Grappelli did not have any competitors in the 1930s.
