Music of the World: Portugal serves as a light introduction to fado, the bittersweet ballad style now synonymous with Portugal and Cabo Verde. Light because the performances range from great to merely passable readings in this highly emotive form. Compared to the work of masters like Amalia Rodrigues and Carlos Paredes, the performances here are lacking, but it's still a nice introduction to fado. "Fado Bacalhau," "Gaivota," and "Marcha Do Bairro Alto" stand out among the 14 tracks as high points.
