Thanks largely to geography, Papua/Nugini is surely the territory with the most musical variety per head of population. The Iatmul recordings, made in the early '70s, include fine flute music for solo and ensembles, as well as other wind music and a little percussion. The Kaluli are a small group living in central Papua. This album provides the recordings of the music discussed in Stephen Feld's award-winning book of the same name. The Abelam album, more vocally oriented, is devoted to music for socio-religious events, such as building and consecrating a ceremonial house, yam festivals, and rites of passage.
