One of the more highly recommended anthologies of Bulgarian music, primarily because it's one of the most diverse. Rather than focus exclusively on instrumental folk or a cappella vocals, this offers a mixture of the forms. Trio Bulgarka, who have had successful international releases on their own, are by far the most celebrated artists on the collection. For those who are familiar with Bulgarian music primarily through its polyphonic female vocal groups, the record offers a bit of that, but also sprightly instrumental music featuring gaida, gadulka, kaval, and tamboura; a few of the tracks combine vocals with instrumental accompaniment. Very cleanly recorded, all the material exhibits the unusual middle-eastern flavored melodies for which Bulgarian folk music of this sort is renowned.
