In the collection Musicworks # 63. This is the sound from the recent sound installation (installed in galleries and music spaces worldwide, and recorded here from a performance at the Kitchen, NYC) with the collective title "Sounds and the Machines That Make Them." Another part of this piece includes "Spinner." Always interesting both for their socially philosophical as well as acoustical bases (and the composer's infective sense of humor), this part of Monahan's highly experimental work are produced on mechanical machines called Flaphos, which consist of oscillating sheets of metal, the movements of which are controlled by computer. A related work is Monahan's 1991-present installation piece Music from Nowhere characterized by the use of raw materials used to make loudspeakers and other sound-transducing and creating devices.
