Thanks to John Schneider's well-tempered guitar and the Cal Arts Percussion Ensemble conducted by John Bergamo, listeners are presented with a good overview of Harrison's sometimes pastoral and sometimes crashingly celebratory "Canticle No. 3" (1941) for ocarina, guitar, and percussion. The ocarina suggests Native American and Japanese folk melodies; the guitar is used as a percussion instrument along with gamelan-like suspended brake drums and shaker (more melodic, but still unusual in Pythagorean and just tuning and Babylonian/Arabic and artificial scales). Excellent performances.
