AllMusic Review by

Christopher Young's most unabashedly melancholic and intimate score, Murder in the First boasts an emotional intensity on par with the visceral impact of his finest horror scores, complete with a thematic complexity that vaults this little-known effort into the ranks of the composer's finest hours. A work of striking maturity, Murder in the First develops Young's primary themes to their fullest, leaving no nuance unexplored or potential unmet -- what's most remarkable is the music's tenderness, all the more surprising given the potent terror so often associated with Young's name. An excellent if criminally underrated score.
