Mulligan-Baker Review

by Scott Yanow

This double LP is full of valuable recordings. The classic Gerry Mulligan pianoless quartet with trumpeter Chet Baker is heard on eight gems including "Line for Lyons," "Lady Is a Tramp" and their hit version of "My Funny Valentine." In addition, Gerry Mulligan performs with his unusual tentette of 1951 (which featured two baritones and maracas) and Jeru and Allen Eager head a sextet on a 17-minute version of his original "Mulligan's Too." This two-fer concludes with four numbers taken from Chet Baker's many quintet sessions of 1965 with tenor-saxophonist George Coleman and pianist Kirk Lightsey.
