Despite the quality of Evan Dando's songwriting, it's probably no surprise that it was a cover song -- specifically, Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson" -- that propelled the Lemonheads to fame, however briefly. After all, this was a fantastic cover band -- their take on Suzanne Vega's "Luka" outdid the original, and on the excellent Favorite Spanish Dishes EP, they displayed both the inclination and the cajones to tackle songs popularized by Linda Ronstadt, New Kids on the Block, and the Misfits. The Lemonheads' "Mrs. Robinson" is breezy and bouncy, free of the nostalgic hand-wringing of the original -- the sheer delight Dando takes in singing the phrase "coo-coo-ka-choo" is infectious. Three acoustic tunes -- "Being Around," "Divan," and "Into Your Arms" -- round out this brief EP; the latter is particularly impressive, a tender love song remarkably free of snark.
