Mr. Mention Review

by Ron Wynn

This set concentrates on love and romance, with Banton's ideas falling into the arch-traditional vein on such songs as "Love Black Woman," "Love How The Gal Dem Flex" and "Love Me Brownin'." While he avoids the easy vulgarity that plagues several of his comrades, Banton's heavy-voiced quips lack the flexibility, speed, tonal color or creativity of several top toasters, and he seldom discusses anything other than his sexual desires or abilities, except his proficiency on the microphone. Within that limited universe, a couple of the CD's cuts are interesting. But thus far, it's hard to understand why he's so popular based on the content of his recordings.
