AllMusic Review by

While Charles Mackerras recorded Mozart's complete Piano Concertos and Symphonies for Telarc in the late Eighties and early Nineties, he recorded only four of Mozart's operas, the three Da Ponte operas plus Die Zauberflöte. More than a decade later, Deutsche Grammophon filled a conspicuous hole in catalogue with Mackerras' recording of La Clemenza di Tito, Mozart's last Italian opera from the last summer of his life. As those who have heard Mackerras' Mozart recording may already have guessed, this Clemenza is wonderful from top to bottom on stage and off. Mackerras' Mozart in a serious mood is still rhythmically light, melodically expressive, harmonically polished, dramatically cogent and emotionally compelling. With the clear, colorful and supremely capable Scottish Chamber Orchestra in the pit, Mackerras creates an ideal sound world for the singers on stage. And with the heroic but edgy Rainer Trostas Tito, the strong but stout John Relyea as Publio and especially the sultry but soulful Magdalena Kozená as Sesto, Mackerras has a cast that admirably suits Mozart's highly charged music. Deutsche Grammophon's sound is more transparent but more immediate than Telarc's sound. Anyone who has followed Mackerras' Mozart will want to check out his La Clemenza di Titto and anyone who follows La Clemenza di Tito will want to check out Mackerras'.
