AllMusic Review by

Based on the concept of the communal drum circle, Motherdrum takes ensemble percussion to a deeper level with its pulsing, trance-like compositions. Like the group's first release, DRUMMING INSIDE MOTHER EARTH, MOTHER'S HEARTBEAT was recorded live, and has an immediate, organic feel that makes the listener feel as though he or she has stumbled across a tribal ritual in the middle of a forest.

With the exception of some haunting flute melodies, the album is almost solely percussion, and Motherdrum's shifting rhythms, accents, and emphasis on repetition is alluring. Titles like "The Summoning," "Nada (Universal Heartbeat)," and "The Journey" gesture to the meaning inherent in these rhythmic patterns, one that draws listeners closer to the pulses of the earth and of the human body.
