An important "new" ragtime pianist and composer, Frank French performs a wide variety of music on his debut CD. He mixes together a couple of Jelly Roll Morton tunes with vintage works by James Scott, Ernesto Nazareth (a trio of tangos), an early cakewalk, and one of Joseph Lamb's last pieces (1959's "The Alaskan Rag"). In addition, there are more recent works from French, David Thomas Roberts, and Hal Isbitz that, while displaying their own personalities, fit well into classic ragtime. This is a very enjoyable disc of fresh music that is easily recommended to ragtime collectors.
