Monokini features a number of French groups performing rather engaging lo-fi alternative pop/rock with a distinct retro feel. For instance, there is an undeniable Velvet Underground sound to Monochrome Orchestra's "Harley-Davidson" that's marvelously casual and almost effortless. And it's not just the type of songs these French groups perform but their murky production sound as well that makes them sound like relics from the '60s. In the end, you can't help but find the majority of these songs captivating since this is the sort of lo-fi pop/rock that had become increasingly difficult to find in the States at the time of this compilation's release in 2001.
