Movietone's second single effectively cuts ties with Rachel Brook's collaboration with Dave Pearce in Flying Saucer Attack -- with its Velvet Underground-like melody, free-jazz skronk finale, and shattering-glass effects, "Mono Valley" is entirely its own beast. The song begins innocently enough with its ringing, hypnotic guitar lead and light, percussive beat, but quickly detours into chaos -- ominous, haunted-house piano creeps in and out of the mix, which culminates in what sounds like a hall of mirrors slowly crashing to rubble. The instrumental "Under the 3000-Foot Red Ceiling" likewise opens with jazz-noir rhythms that give way to an unhinged clarinet solo, catalyzing the uncommon feel for mood and atmosphere that would serve Movietone so well throughout future efforts.
