The first song on Jed Whitey's Mongoloid Cage Match LP begs the rather valid question: "Are You Ready to Hate Us?" Well, responses may vary, but the deciding factor is likely to hinge on the listener's ability to "get" the internal jokes driving the band's gag-crammed clown-mobile. Not an unusual dilemma facing intentionally comic rock bands, such lyrical shenanigans inevitably tend to undermine the musical qualifications herein; but this being hardcore-tinged punk rock with fuzzy alternative associations, perhaps humor is as distinguishing a feature as one could hope for. And the truth is there's plenty of fun (not quite hilarity) to be had in purposefully moronic ditties like "My Own Private Altamont," "I Am Spasticus," and the dangerously suggestive "We Used Your Record as a Beer Coaster" (don't tempt us, now!). In any case, there's something to be said for an album where a manic romp through Devo's "Uncontrollable Urge" winds up the most serious moment of all. Highly recommended for very bored teenagers.
