AllMusic Review by

Ten different sessions dating from 1954-1957 featuring all-star musicians from the West Coast are reissued on this highly appealing two-CD set. It is difficult to surmise, even after reading the extensive liner notes, who exactly is the leader of most of these sessions, although the lone album led and organized by writer Howard Lucraft is among the dates, as are a few sets produced by Leonard Feather. Among the featured stars of the 38 selections are such notables as trumpeter/arranger Shorty Rogers; trumpeters Harry "Sweets" Edison, Conte Candoli, and Don Fagerquist; trombonists Bob Enevoldsen and Frank Rosolino; altoists Bud Shank, Buddy Collette, Art Pepper, Charlie Mariano, and Herb Geller; tenor saxophonist Bob Cooper; Jimmy Giuffre on various reeds; and pianists Pete Jolly, Lorraine Geller, Gerry Wiggins, Marty Paich, Claude Williamson, and André Previn; among others. The concise performances are prime West Coast jazz, even if none of the sessions are all that famous. Fans of the idiom will definitely want this two-fer.
