Mob Hits: Doo Wop Review

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The idea behind Medalist's double-disc, 26-track collection Mob Hits: Doo Wop isn't just a sound one, it's rather inspired. Like other entries in their Mob Hits series, this has songs featured in mob movies, but this one picks up on Marty Scorsese's fondness for using classic doo wop tracks in his flicks. Indeed, much of this draws from Goodfellas, Mean Streets, Casino, etc., and those that aren't from Scorsese films feel like they should have been -- which, of course, also means that films like A Bronx Tale or shows like The Sopranos have picked up on this trait. But there's no need to debate whether filmmakers should have followed through in this fashion when the music is as fun and listenable as this. At times, this does delve into the familiar, selecting songs that are better known from oldies radio than movies, but this plays well and is a first-rate doo wop collection, for those that either love mob movies or doo wop.
