The American Shadow label has made a habit of licensing the work of Europe's best electronica artists for stateside release. This installment features the music of French DJ Shinju Gumi, whose mix of exotic downtempo moods and straight-ahead trip-hop may not be entirely original, but is consistently compelling. Mixing a Ghost features a bunch of guest remix artists, most of them relatively obscure. Tarwater brings a vaguely jungly atmosphere to the minimalist "Dust of Dawn," and succeeds admirably; the 7-Hurtz remix of "Beyond Hypothermia" draws on house influences without succumbing to a mind-numbing house beat; the Solex remix of "Senor Gumi" uses an artful combination of string bass samples, counterintuitive breakbeats, and strangely nasal female vocals to create a piece of funky but completely undanceable beat art guaranteed to make your guests go home at the end of the party. Very nice.
