Tânia Alves, in fact an actress who had some success as a singer, specializes in the repertory known as fossa: deeply heartfelt songs about separations, generally invoking a smoky bar in solitude, depression, and despair. Tragedies are not uncommon in the fossa imaginary, and "Vingança" (by Lupicínio Rodrigues, also the writer of many other songs included in this compilation and the most prominent of the fossa composers) was responsible for at least two noticed suicides. This hasty description doesn't do justice to the immense poetic and melodic talent of Rodrigues and other fossa composers, serving as a general introduction. Boleros and sambas-canção are the focus of the style, and Tânia Alves can hold her own in it.
