AllMusic Review by

Sony Classical's Music in Film compilation demonstrates the new avenues of expression that movie scores opened up for talented, even legendary composers. This can't be considered a definitive overview of the century's best or most artistic film music by any means -- there's just too much to cover, and there are obvious omissions like Ennio Morricone -- but most of what's here is pretty good, particularly the older material. Composers present include Sergei Prokofiev, David Raksin, Aaron Copland, Dimitri Tiomkin, Leonard Bernstein, John Williams, Bernard Herrmann, Miklos Rozsa, and John Barry, among others; the film scores represented include Star Wars, Bridge Over the River Kwai, The Magnificent Seven, East of Eden, Ben-Hur, Psycho, Laura, On the Waterfront, and many more.
