Mighty Real is Minneapolis performance artist Djola Branner's tribute to '70s legendary gay disco vocalist Sylvester. The recording is very strong musically, drawing from the wells of popular soul and gospel. It was this union of the sacred and secular universes that led to Sylvester's hits "Do Ya Wanna Funk," "Can't Stop Dancing," and "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)." Branner incarnates these and more here. This collection of material is part of a stage tribute by Branner. Here Branner gives props to the creative well-spring that led to such pop figures as Boy George, RuPaul, and Prince. Joining Branner here on the serious, superlative tribute is jazz vocalist Debbie Duncan, pianist Tommy Barbarella, and composer/musician Aaron Barnell.
