Mercury Sessions, Vol. 1 collects the first 14 tracks that Flatt & Scruggs recorded for Mercury Records between 1948 and 1950. The duo made these recordings after they broke away from Bill Monroe, and the adventurous qualities of the music demonstrates why they had to split away from the father of bluegrass -- they were expanding the boundaries of the music. Consequently, these song are rightly regarded as Flatt & Scruggs' best and most influential recordings, and the duo's instrumental skills and harmonies are still breathtaking several decades after they were recorded. Any serious bluegrass collection isn't complete without Flatt & Scruggs' Mercury Recordings, either in this format or in Mercury's single-disc The Complete Mercury Sessions.
