A Blue Note collection released not too long after Morgan passed, Memorial Album brings together six top, if not always prime, performances by the star hard bop trumpeter and an impressive cadre of the day's best players. Whether burning through his most famous side, "The Sidewinder," or tossing off endless jewels on one of the all-time great jazz ballads, "Ceora," Morgan consistently shows both panache and poise. In addition to a mighty store of originals, this was the legacy Morgan left during his 15 or so years of solo work. Since eclipsed by more recent roundups, Memorial Album still qualifies as a respectable entrée for newcomers.
