The most artistically credible volume of Rhino's Mellow Rock Hits of the '70s series focuses on male singer/songwriters. Most of these cats have (or had, at any rate) pretty high critical reps, though this tends to be their most familiar/commercial work: Gordon Lightfoot, Don McLean, Kris Kristofferson, Arlo Guthrie, Steve Goodman, John Prine, Steve Forbert. The second tier includes Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, and John David Souther; Gram Parsons slips in, counterbalanced by Breadman David Gates. Some of the merits of these songs have been dulled by overexposure, but it's certainly one of the more respectable anthologies likely to surface for this sort of thing.
