Starbucks' series of compilations jets off to the 50th state for Mele O Hawai'i (Songs of Hawaii), an informed and enjoyable mix of old and new. The late, great Israel Kamakawiwo’ole kicks off the set with "White Sandy Beach of Hawaii," and while the warm, nostalgic number isn't Iz's signature tune, ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro is here with his, a haunting take on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps. " Willie K brings the Mahalo blues-rock on the easy pickin' "For You Ku’uipo," Taj Mahal crosses over from the mainland with a soft pop love song for a "Moonlight Lady," and when it comes to Hawai'an music royalty, the Pahinui Brothers are represented by the one and only "Pops," as slack key guitar great Gabby Pahinui basks in the "Blue Hawaiian Moonlight." A well-rounded set with excellent selections, buyers of the physical product get a booklet filled with short bios, to boot. Best enjoyed with a hot cup of Kona.
