Maynard Ferguson initiated a short-lived series for Concord in 1996 in which he presented young talented jazz players on their debuts as leaders. Christian Jacob has since realized his potential, playing regularly in the Los Angeles area. Already a very talented pianist in the modern mainstream at the time of this recording in 1996, Jacob performs six of his thoughtful originals and four standards in a trio with bassist John Patitucci and drummer Peter Erskine. He reharmonizes the standards, making them his own, while his own originals are often impressionistic. This is the type of set that rewards repeated listenings, featuring tight interplay between the musicians and complex yet subtle improvising.
