AllMusic Review by

This live set by Max Roach is listed as a 1960 concert in an unspecified city; it's actually from a 1964 Paris performance. The drummer is joined by tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, pianist Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, and bassist Eddie Khan. The opening track is an extended workout of Jordan's "The Highest Mountain," featuring a solo by each member in turn. The moving duet of "Ceciliana" showcases Perkinson with Khan playing both arco and pizzicato. Roach's interpretation of the bop favorite "Mop Mop" is unaccompanied, while Jordan also sits out the trio arrangement for Duke Jordan's "Jordu," which opens with Khan's moody, droning bowed solo. The tenor saxophonist finally returns for a loping take of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady," with the leader sticking to brushes.
