AllMusic Review by

A more diverse collection than Masterworks (though both include MAW-related hits "Moonshine" and "The Bounce"), MAW Records: The Compilation, Vol. 1 collects essential tracks from the two-year history of Vega and Gonzalez' own label. It alternates genre workouts like the Latin-tinged "MAW War" and "India con Lavoe" with more mainstream dancefloor fillers such as Ruffneck's "Everybody Be Somebody" and KenLou's "What a Sensation." The highlight for both production and delivery, however, comes with the 12-minute remix of "To Be in Love," an M.F.S.B. cover with MAW's effortless, chunky disco production flowing seamlessly under a definitive, outboard, near-scatting vocal by India and live add-ons by keyboard player Albert "Sterling" Menendez and bassist Gene Perez. An excellent blend of straight-ahead house, disco flashbacks, midtempo tracks, and Latin excursions, The Compilation, Vol. 1 provides the best introduction to the stunning, diverse resumé of Masters at Work.
