AllMusic Review by

Although one does not think of the 1950's and 60's as a period when jazz had a lot of "hits," occasionally a fluke recording would make the charts and catch on. 19 fairly popular cuts (although not "Take Five" or "Hello Dolly") from the 1949-67 period (all but the first two are from 1959-67) are included on this Rhino CD collection in their '45' single versions which were often expertly edited to be briefer than their LP counterpart. Such artists as James Moody (a version of "I'm In The Mood For Love" that was the basis for "Moody's Mood For Love"), Count Basie, Charles Mingus, the Jazztet ("Killer Joe"), Gene Ammons, John Coltrane (a greatly truncated version of "My Favorite Things"), Eddie Harris ("Exodus"), Herbie Mann, Stan Getz ("Desafinado"), Jimmy Smith, Hank Crawford, Vince Guaraldi ("Cast Your Fate To The Wind"), Jimmy McGriff, Mongo Santamaria, Donald Byrd, Horace Silver, Ramsey Lewis, Cannonball Adderley ("Mercy, Mercy, Mercy") and Wes Montgomery are all represented in this interesting sampler.
