AllMusic Review by

1929 was a hot year for Duke Ellington, and the folks behind the Masters of Jazz historical reissue label want you to savor that fact by closely studying 23 recordings he made during the first three months of 1929 under the headings of His Famous Orchestra, His Cotton Club Orchestra, the Washingtonians or the Jungle Band. Even while this meticulously laid out survey includes alternate takes (even a second version of "Tiger Rag, Pt. 1") it skips the second rendition of "Stevedore Stomp" and omits the soundtrack of the Pathé motion picture Black and Tan Fantasy, recorded during February of 1929. Rather than an easy taste for casual listening, Masters of Jazz, Vol. 6: 1929 is a collector's edition designed for those who want to compare multiple performances of the same song and revel in almost as much early Duke Ellington as humanly possible. While most of the material heard here has appeared on other early Ellington compilations, track 23 stands apart from the rest as a delectable rarity. "He Just Don't Appeal to Me," a recording originally released on 78 rpm platters bearing the Cameo, Lincoln, and Romeo labels, is an old-style blues number performed by vocalist Ozie Ware (Ozie McPherson) and the Whoopee Makers. This vocalist made her first records in 1925 with Lovie Austin, cut five titles with Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra in 1926, recorded with Ellington groups billed either as the Hot Five or the Whoopee Makers during the years 1928-1929, and made her last records in the autumn of 1929 with the vaudeville team of Coot Grant and Wesley Wilson. "He Just Don't Appeal to Me" is one of the five recordings that Ozie Ware is known to have made backed by an Ellington-led ensemble.
