AllMusic Review by

This three-disc box set provides an overview of Tennessee Ernie's recording career from 1949 through 1976, and, although it is in aggregate a more generous collection than many others, each disc contains only 16 or 17 tracks. Consequently, this box set has only ten more selections than Razor & Tie's two-disc Ultimate collection. Masters does feature an interesting assortment of recordings, including unreleased songs, numerous duets and collaborations, and seldom-anthologized tracks from the '70s. Many (but not all) of the hits are here, but the rarities and obscurities are what make this box so enjoyable, from live performances at the 1960 Indiana State Fair to a previously unreleased duet with Tex Williams. The tracks are not sequenced chronologically, which makes it more difficult to grasp Ford's artistic development, but Masters provides a number of great tracks and good annotation, making it an adequate expanded anthology until Bear Family releases a complete recordings box set or until a more comprehensive collection comes along.
