AllMusic Review by

Mastercuts: Urban is a rather open-minded mix of R&B and rap, factoring in both the mainstream and the underground. Most of the tracks included were released at some point within the past 15 years, though there's a bizarre slant toward the early '90s. Unlike a good number of Mastercuts comps, which occasionally try to be too broad in scope, this one casts a rather laid-back tone throughout. As a result, the transitions are consistently smooth. TLC's "Creep," SWV's "Right Here," A Tribe Called Quest's "Check the Rhime," and Groove Theory's "Tell Me" represent the early '90s; Peven Everett's "Testin' Me," Donell Jones' "U Know What's Up," Amp Fiddler's "Eye to Eye," and Jay Dee's "Give It Up" are just some of the more-recent picks.
