The biggest problem when confronted with the task of putting together a downtempo-oriented mix is that the result is destined to include a couple surrogate snooze buttons. Mastercuts: Chilled is a two-disc set of tracks that's devoted almost entirely to downtempo material, so it's no surprise that there's a generous supply of moments that only fall into the background. That said, it does score extra points for including almost all 11 minutes of Pépé Bradock's fatigue-proof classic "Deep Burnt," along with a couple inspired picks from the Matthew Herbert Big Band ("Turning Pages"), Faze Action ("In the Trees"), and Izzi Dunn ("The Big Picture"). Though mixing is technically involved, the blends are very minor -- more as a means to keep things moving than to show mixing proficiency.
