This single album contains 15 of Dexter Gordon's significant Savoy sides from the prime years of the bop era. Gordon was (along with Wardell Gray and Teddy Edwards) the top young tenor of the period and his fame and influence would soon dwarf his two competitors. These quartet and quintet performances (featuring such top players as pianist Bud Powell, baritonist Leo Parker and trumpeter Fats Navarro) are concise, swinging and advanced for the time. This set is really more for general collectors since all of this music (plus the alternate takes, an additional session and one jam-session number) were included on the two-fer Long Tall Dexter.
