The Soneros All Stars and their relentless pursuit of changui, the head waters of son, have released another project, this time with powerful vocalist Cristina Azcuy as the helm. With successful tresero/musicologist Jan Bogdan acting as the project's producer, the unlikely assortment of Swedish and Cuban musicians took to the studio to back up the fabulous Azcuy. The results are summed up nicely by Azcuy's very first word on the record: sabroso! With a voice as rich and sweet as dark rum, Azcuy enchants the listener from the first note to the last. Her sensitivity and grace is unparalleled in her native Cuba. With a look as hip as a Cuban Erykah Badu, and voice as authoritative as Beny Moré, Azcuy's first is sure not to be her last. As to the production and style of her debut record, Marianao, the Soneros All Stars are also establishing their name as one of quality and refinement. Outside Cuban music enthusiasts coming in to produce records is a tree that seldom bears good fruit. Bogdan, on the other hand, seems so natural a fit that his roots take to the sandy soil just fine. Cuban music will profit greatly not only from Bogdan and his cohorts, but also from any light that they can shine on the island's brilliantly talented native daughter.
