Margareta Paslaru is a singer/actress/activist of great renown in her native Romania. She now makes her home in New Jersey. On this CD she sings Romanian lyrics in a husky yet pleasant voice. The distinctively Eastern European material - in which one hears Italian, Polish, and possibly German influences - is marred by the thin-sounding, tinny backing tracks. Some may get a kick out Paslaru's Romanian-language rendition of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" ("Cuvinte în plus"), but it sounds like karaoke more than anything else. The last six songs are the most rewarding, as they are drawn from authentic Romanian folklore. The memorable melodies are buoyed by Paslaru's theatrical delivery. New York's own Paradox Trio accompanies her on the hypnotic "Bate, mama, lemnele."
