Marcelo Álvarez: Bel Canto Review

by AllMusic

Young, handsome and talented, Marcello Alvarez represents the next wave of tenors to hit the opera scene. Before becoming a singer, Alvarez was an accountant and assistant manager at a furniture factory in Argentina. With the encouragement of his wife and voice teacher, he decided to "go for it" and pursue his musical career. The rest, as it is said, is history. This disc of bel canto favorites serves as a fine example of Alvarez's broad talent. He seems ideally suited for the role of the Duke in Verdi's 'Rigoletto;' his singing of "Questa o quella" has that precise combination of debonair charm and superficial cruelty. Alvarez sings this material with a kind of ease that comes from only an artist that has done his homework: "La donna e mobile" further illuminates this, and Alvarez seems quite in touch with the defective personality of the Duke. Certainly "Una Furtiva Lagrima" from Donizetti's 'L'Elisir d'amore' is a perfect fit for Alvarez, and the opening scene from Bellini's 'I Puritani' (with Ying Huang) is another example of this singer's great technical and musical abilities. The world of finance may have lost an accountant, but the opera world acquired an exceptional new talent.
