Mamborama! Review

by Tony Wilds

One may expect the number one star of Tico to make quite an impression on the label's first 12" long player. The lovely "keyhole" jacket suggests we're being let in on the Next Big Thing. Unfortunately, the LP is rather tame, rivaling neither his previous Tico 10" mambo LPs nor his great RCA albums. The title track has interesting solos, and vibes are used here and there. "Mambo Rumbon" is a highlight, but generally it is a cautious, consistent step, offering next to nothing of Puente's hip, "avant-garde" Latin jazz or bombastic Latin drumming. As with Joe Loco's albums of the same style and period, a little can go a long way.
