Dewey Erney is an excellent standards singer based in Southern California who enjoys putting a lot of heart and honest feeling into vintage tunes. He sticks to the lyrics and the melodies while adding swing and his own subtle musical personality to the music that he loves. On this project, the veteran singer is joined by an orchestra arranged and led by Tom Kubis, who also plays tenor, soprano, and some background piano. The ensemble is a bit unusual in that the only reeds are by Kubis and flutist Kate Prestia-Schaub (Erney's great niece) and there is a string quartet instead of the saxophone section. It works quite well. There are solos along the way for trumpeter Ron Stout, trombonist Andy Martin, and pianist Gerry Schroeder (Kubis takes a short spot on "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World") but the main focus is on Dewey Erney and the orchestra. Fans of the singer will need to add Lucky to Be Me to their collection.
