Michelle Conte, who makes her recording debut on Lucky Me!, has a pleasant voice and swings lightly. Unfortunately she does little else. She tends to sing the first chorus of each song straight, and after some short solos, she returns to sing the last chorus in a similar manner. Another problem with this unadventurous and rather safe release is that the repertoire is dominated by warhorses, mostly songs such as "Lush Life," "Makin' Whoopee," and "Fly Me to the Moon" that certainly did not need to be recorded again, particularly not in yet another forgettable and predictable version. There are some worthwhile solos along the way from guitarist Mark Elf, pianist Allen Farnham, and saxophonist Walt Weiskopf, but otherwise this date is merely routine. Conte needs to develop her own musical personality or at least a fresher repertoire.
