Luck is the first solo album from Masha Qrella, a member of the German bands Contriva and Mina. Anyone vaguely familiar with those two groups won't be too thrown off by Qrella's debut, a collection of folky indie pop songs occasionally supported with drum loops. Save for a handful of guest spots, she plays everything on the album and adds her sweet-sounding (in English) vocals. The lyrics are often immaterial, since the manner in which they're delivered acts as another instrument. These are lovely, comforting songs, deserving of as much attention as any likeminded album on a prominent American indie label. Even without the song titled "To Mr. Wyatt," Luck would bear the evident influence of Robert Wyatt.
