Though music marketers would like to think that Latino rap was a natural outgrowth of the Latin pop explosion of the late '90s, it's really only the attention that's new. West Coast acts from Cypress Hill to the Beatnuts to Lighter Shade of Brown had made Latin rap an interesting subgenre of hip-hop since the beginning of the decade. Lowrider Bajito Tour 99 not only crosses multiple genres, but fuses music with the lowrider car culture centered in Southern California. With tracks by Cypress Hill's Sen Dog and B-Real as well as Frost, the album easily accomplishes its twin goals: provide deep jeepbeats for audiophiles, and divert listeners with fluid rhymes.
