Harry Nilsson was always a maverick artist, following his own sense of style in the world of pop, turning out carefully crafted -- even baffling -- songs that shared no direct affinity with any other artist of his day. He was also enamored of the great songwriters of the so-called Tin Pan Alley tradition, to the point where it almost seemed he was born out of time as an artist. This interesting collection spotlights another dimension to Nilsson's talent -- he sure knew how to sing a love song. His version of Badfinger's "Without You," included here, is simply stunning, taking the melody of an already gorgeous song into the path of angels. Also check out his rendition of the classic "As Time Goes By" -- in Nilsson's hands it gathers just the right mix of wounded regret, wistful joy, and unabated hope, all tinged with a beautiful and breathtaking sadness.
