Arranger Thomas Talbert had not recorded as a leader in over 20 years when he had a rare opportunity to document his California band. Half of the music on this Sea Breeze CD is the five-song "Louisiana Suite" which pays tribute to aspects of the state but does not hint at New Orleans jazz. Talbert also performs six of his shorter originals; his 14-piece band consists of four woodwinds, a french horn, four trumpets, two trombones and a rhythm section. Among the key soloists are trumpeters Bob Summers and Steve Huffsteter, tenorman Bob Hardaway and guitarist Joe Diorio. The results should easily please fans of modern big bands and it does seem strange that Thomas Talbert's next record would not be cut for another decade.
